Review:

I must say that im impressed with the quality of this album from our friends at BumpFoot. This release fall under the foot (ambient) section of the label and it is a outstanding release.

Lots of the ambient released today has a lot fo IDM influence, sometimes with sucess and sometimes just too obscure for repeated listening. This release drops into the space ambient genre and truly is enjoyable. Even though the music is minimal or simplistic, its delivery of mood and feeling is highly effective. Essentially utilising the basics of ambient .. Lush soundscapes and slow melodies to name a few.

It gets a very high rating from me and comes recommended. Once again, its ambient, so ifs its dance music your after, rather give it a miss. But if you need some mental relaxation or good reading / painting music, this music comes from heaven.

Review:

For those of you with a little more obscure taste in downtempo and ambient this release is something made for you guys. If you ever liked anything by Boards of Canada, you have to download this. Its one of the few similar artists that i have found. The best part is that its free! Unbelievable?

Blending synth melodies and downtempo beats Hills West creates blissful ambient soundscapes. If you heard this playing somewhere and you didn't know who it was, you will think its Boards of Canada. Thats not easily achieved at all.

I give this album a good solid 4.5/5. It will work for you if you know the BoC style. Else it might take you time to get used to...

To summarize ... Its beautiful and well worth the download.

Review:

The Kirbi present us all with a fantastic album. It covers a diverse range of genre's but all are hybridized with break beats creating an almost unheard of style of music.

Using sounds from New Age and other retro styles it all comes together to create some of the best free music available today. The album does slow down as it moves along, but its never boring and never average. Good vocal samples and superb melodies are used throughout and its refreshing.

Ive given it a few plays and so far im really impressed, Its funky, beautiful and emotionally stimulating. Get it now, its highly recommended.

Review:

This release from "vate" seems to be independently released. He uses an interesting combination of lo-fi beats, gritty basslines, pulsing synthlines and some nice sweeps to create a funky hybrid style. The music really has a good texture and i cant help but think Leftfield or even Fluke when i listen to it. It's not purely from those two, but definitely does have some elements from a musical point of view. (give "Cachonda" a listen for an example)

Its a very well produced album and im giving it 4 out of 5. It would have gotten 5 if he gave us a few more tracks ;)

Review:

Slow, almost silent ambient fills this album from start to finish. Nothing too obscure or noisy, just the kind of ambient you would want to listen to while going to bed or reading a book. Unobtrusive material is sometimes good for the mind...

This album is definitely directed towards the followers of the ambient genre. Don't get me wrong, its really good and might even appeal to some with only an interest in ambient. It contains some elements of Steve Roach, mixed up with a bit of Brian Eno just add in a couple of pops and glitches to fill up the empty spaces.

I recommend listening to this album in the correct environment. Make sure you have your headphones on, or you're bound to lose a lot of the sound from room acoustics. Its really something you can listen to with the lights down and with your eyes closed.

Review:

Very deep techno, with loads of panning stereo effects, Deep sub basslines and enough clicks to satisfy most minimal and IDM fans. It can get a little repetitive but some might find it hypnotic enough to enjoy. Its kind of a mix between minimal and IDM with loads of filters and delays all over the shop.

Initially when i listened to it on my speaker system at home I was not extremely impressed. But when i put on my headphones and gave it a listen, it took on a new shape. It might be the same for you, so maybe give it a spin on your i-pod as well.

So overall its good stuff. I however would not recommend it to people who dont listen to a lot of abstract minimalist stuff. If your a die hard fan of minimal or IDM this might just work for you.

Ill give it a 3

VA - Toucan Presents 2006 (Mix)

Toucan Presents 2006 (Mix)

Genre: Dance / Electronic
Album URL
Release Date: 27-Nov-2006

Review:
The people at Toucan Records let me know that they do have a couple of mixes available for us to try. Because I mentioned I'd like to hear a compilation from them it seems that my wish has been granted. (thanks John)

The mix is fantastic with a superb selection of tracks. This mix does showcase the music force behind toucan. This is the kind of set that would get you to stick your head in the speaker and dance like there was no tomorrow. At the 40 minute mark, this mix really takes off! Thats where you start dancing like no one is watching and you hope that you have some good medical cover. (your going to hurt the next day when you wake up).

This release is a definite must have for all dance music lovers out there. From the hard-house to the trance fans, this mix will make you download more from Toucan. It moves between a couple of genre theme's, going from epic house to electro and then to more high energy trance.

The Toucan Records releases all seem to have a trance influence, sometimes almost dreamy, but always stay dancefloor friendly and never seem to go into the realm of cheesy music. Personally I'm lactose intolerant when it comes to music. I cant handle cheesy tunes, it makes me sick. I have the occasionally slice of cheese, but mostly cant stand the stuff.

But there is nothing cheesy on here... not by a long shot.

Track List:
1) Power Line - Psychadelik Pedestrian (original mix)
2) Last Flight Home - Marc Burt (original mix)
3) So Sublime - Redmann (Phish Funk remix)

Today we break the norm and only review a single track? Toucan Records never seem to release albums but only single tracks. Most of the tracks are truely top of the line stuff, but because there is never a compilation or any grouping of the music i never review it.

Well, enough is enough. I just cant leave it anymore.

If you want a truly epic sounding hard house track, then grab this one. Funky , slamming beats and bass ... exactly what you need from a house track.

This one is worth it!

Review:

How much can one say about minimalist or ambient music? I guess its a bit of a paradox to have too much to say about nothing?

This mini album reminded me of some music i heard years ago. I cannot put my finger on the artist / track name, but it was on one of the Detroit Techno albums of (MANY) years gone by. It just had that same feel as something there??

I found the first track to be a little abstract for my taste, but still had some entertaining quality to it. It might grow on me if i give it more time (a lot of music does), but up to the point of reviewing it, it was just not palatable to me.

The second track however is a mind bender... The bass used is so very basic yet so damn effective. It makes you want to hear it louder and louder all the time, then half way through just as you think its over it comes back with this beautifully arpegiated sound joining in. a Fantastic piece of music in my (somewhat over opinionated) opinion.

Its staying in my collection thats for sure. Give it a spin or at least the second track if you are not sure.

Review:

Aaah, finally something for the jungle-ists out there. From PHat basslines to euphoric beats, Everything is here to give you a prime example of what jungle should sound like. Mongrel uses a lot of vocal samples in his music including people like John Travolta, George W Bush (yip the current US President) and a number of others. Some of the samples seem almost out of place, but never subtracts anything from the quality of the music. Its very funky and never boring, i wouldn't call it perfect but its far better than average thats for sure.

This is a recommended download to any and all jungle / Drum & Bass fans out there.

Somehow i overlooked this release. I found the compressed file on my PC last night and I was pleasantly surprised once i started listening to it...

The album is apparently a remix of another artist's works. This was done as a competition and these must have been the winning tracks.

The music ranges from dance tunes to more intense electronica. And most of them with definite minimalist influence. All of the tunes are really good with only one that i found a little too much for my personal taste.

Overall its a very good release with some nice fresh tracks.

Genre: Dark House? / Ambient Techno?

Review:

The album has a very very Dark sound, mixed with some mellow (and funky) beats. The second track for instance, mixes straight beats with dark swirling melodies and even fills in with a jazzy style trumpet. This really creates a fantastic mellow sound. This dark sound continues throughout the album and though the style is repeated all the tracks are enjoyable.

The dark elements in the music will be enjoyed by those wanting a little more of a sinister sound in their music. All the music is dancefloor friendly and really just has some unique funky element to it, so even if your not into the darker sound, give this a spin... It might be a little mellow if you want something that screams FUNKY ... But its funky in its own way.

4/5 for this one... Definitely worth the download!

a Slow weekend

This weekend was a little slow... both from my side and by the looks of things some of the labels are also taking it easy. There were few releases and a few really interesting releases.

The Juno6 release (see last review) is just amazing. I am still listening to it.

Juno 6 graces us once again with an amazing release. This release is a total trip from start to finish. Every track bends reality just a little more than the last, creating some really fantastic audio soundscapes. The selection and combination of the instruments really create a lot of depth in the sound. The effects create and overall swirling in the sound, almost as if the music is moving around you.

Its a great release, a definite must download to electronica & Downtempo fans. This is top of the line electronic music...

The song "kind 14" is my favorite

Review:

I have been listening to this album over and over for a few days now. I have been busy on a large project at home which means after work, I have to work some more! My mental state is also a little morbid at the moment. There has been some bad news from an old close friend. This somber mood might have something to do with me appreciating the abstract and soothing sound of some of the tracks on this release.

Three stand out tracks for me on the album are "Complete", "Maze" and "Tea 22". Tea 22 reminds me of the "Global Communications" album called "76:14". Its just got the same undertones as the tracks on that album but Modul superbly blended in IDM squeaks and bleeps to create something i haven't heard before. Another stand out track is "Failed or Succeed". a little less IDM'ish than the rest, but not by much. Here at the halfway mark it just makes me smile...

The album really has the same "epic journey" feel that Global communications captured in their mentioned album and once again this is a keeper album thats going to stay with me till i die one day.

Except for one or two of the tracks this is a smashing album and its VERY highly recommended to IDM fans as well as Ambient fans too (actually to any electronica fan) ... definitely check out the Tea 22 track if you are not sure.

A definite "Must have"

This is definitely one of the better tech-house albums out there at the moment. Pumping beats, crazy melodies and growling basslines from the first to the last track.

The title track really has a good feel, almost like slowed down trance. The second track really has a interesting bass sound and mixes in elements from the minimal techno genre to create the Tech-House theme.

Its a good release from the guys at Gargan Records and is definitely worth the download. Its recommended.

Review:

Ok, so now the proverbial $#!t has hit the fan? If its mind blowing your after, you just found the mother of all blowers! This is a compilation and collaboration between a number of netlabels to produce a very high quality album (of note!).

The album is done with each artist submitting two tracks to the listing. The first two tracks are by "Brett Knacksen", both have a tribal rhythm and even though it never goes into pounding beats its really intense music!

The second artist in the lineup is Amoebafunk giving us a superb psy-trance delivery in his first track. Here and there i hear whispers of Shpongle (litterally almost). This is not a floor filler, its flowing psytrance mixed up with a hint of ambient. His second track is a little more intense using synth lines that give off an almost industrial/EBM sound. Really good stuff all around!

The next artist is PatherKlub giving us some more dancefloor friendly music, but this time stepping well into the realm of EBM. The vocals and bass synth lines especially reminds me of project pitchfork and other EBM artists. His second track reminds me of Neurotic Fish, still EBM but a more pop feel than the other track.

BeCkman is up next, delivering an even more dancefloor friendly mix between house and trance? Its hard to describe the style on this one, but the second track is a definite dancefloor burner!

Ok so we need some bleeps and squeeks to give this album a more complete feel. Qorser brings us some top notch IDM, you have to listen to this with headphones (yeah, your iPod will do just fine). Its mind melting! Both tracks are fantastic ...

And to make sure you get enough, Ben Crea cleans the floor with some pumping house tunes! With house I mean deep deep house. Ben delivers a smooth mix between deep and funky, ready for sipping on a sunday afternoon party.

To summarize:
This album covers a lot. From intense to downright funky. Overall its been a pleasure to listen to it. Its found a new home on my mp3 player and it will be on there for a while still. There will be something in it for almost everyone...

Review:

Another ambient techno album? There seems to be a lot of them lately, but this one is one of the better ones.

a Number of the tracks have a commercial feel at first but soon you realize its a different kind of funky. This is an album you will really appreciate after dancing through it on a dancefloor with massive speakers blowing your ears off.

All of the tracks follow the same style template but is still unique enough to get you to listen to all of them. The last track is a little bit of an exception, moving into break beat style of ambient techno mixed with some jazz grooves. Its less danceable, but still enjoyable.

If minimalist techno is your thing, this will go down well ... give it a try... (this is becoming a cliche isnt it?) 3.5/5

Review:

The album starts off with something that reminded me of Brian Eno or Steve Roach, dont ask me what, but thats the first thing that came up in my head? Some of the tracks are gorgeous and some sort of mill about into nothingness. This is not a bad thing in ambient and is actually what people want when listening to nothingness. I think its the artists usage of synth sweeps and pads that creates this "feeling".

For those of us who like to melt into their seats while listening to music with headphones on and eyes closed, this release will definitely suit you perfectly.

It's a strange album, but still manages to keep your attention as you flow through the tracks. I cannot however recommend it to anyone who is not keen on "intense" ambient (does such a thing exist?) .

Review:

If you are into the sort of hypnotic techno / tech-house genre, this album should slide down pretty well. Pulsing beats and sweeping synth lines create an almost eerie vibe especially on the 3rd track. Its got energy, but not the sort that will burn you out on the dance floor, it might blow your mind though.

I found some of the tracks to be a little too off center and possibly wouldn't have reviewed it, but the 3rd track just reminded me of the hours I' spent on a dancefloor, taking up the beats and basslines oozing from speakers in the early hours of the morning. So i thought it was worth a mention.

This album might not go down with the majority of people and even techno lovers might find it a little "bland" but it just brought back the feeling of an era to me. Maybe I'm wrong and you all love it. Some of you WILL love it, thats for sure ...

So what the heck give it a spin. You can swear at me if I wasted your bandwidth!

Review:

Here we have another one. I don't want to ramble on (again) about how good it is. But I have to for the sake of being consistent on my reviews.

This album is beautiful, mind blowing and well worth the download. If you like chillout, lounge, or downtempo this is for you. It follows along the same lines of Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, DJ Shadow, Four Tet or any other lounge artist out there.

Some of the tracks are a little too "fluffy" though. With one or two of the tracks almost sounding like adds to promotional videos. If you are into the easy listening thing, this will go down very well with you. Else just skip the songs that has too much "pep" in it.

Still Computer Pop is an album that I'm keeping in my collection. Its the kind of album you want to listen to on a Sunday afternoon after a Long weekend of partying.

Rating: 4/5

Review:

Can it be? another 5 star album? Its beautiful and deep, lush and thought provoking. Really laid back stuff with an IDM influence. This is what IDM should sound like ... complex and interesting. The bleeps and blips are there, but they are used as a filler for the music instead of it being a main element.

Once again we have an album which defies logic. How can this be free? Its emotionally charged from start to end and there are a lot of stand out tracks on the album. It has been on my mp3 player for a few days now and i cant get enough of it.

This album is staying in my collection forever. It's really that good. I like chilled out / IDM artists and this one gets a full 5/5 from me. Damn it, ill give it a 6!

Dub anyone? Deep growling sub basses? Slow dub beats? loads of sound effects? Its refreshingly good to hear dub of such high quality. This album has a lot to offer. Some tracks have an IDM influence and some hit the boundaries of jungle creating unique and interesting compositions. Its all good, from track 1 all the way through to the last track.

Some of the later tracks seem to go into unknown territory blending pulsing beats with dub and electro synths, creating dub which might actually work on a dance floor (if you can handle the bass!!) Fantastic stuff i tell you!

This is a various artists compilation featuring a wide range of very good music. Production is top notch and its a must have!! Get it while its free!

The album starts off with a funky drumbeat in the first track which sets a high expectation of the album. The second track does not disappoint either, continuing where the first track ends off. The rest of the album definitely lives up to the first track.

Its another solid release from the guys at Vorbic. I am very impressed with their releases up to now. Once gain an album that comes highly recommended to any fan of trip hop, acid jazz, downtempo and anything "break beat".

Some reasonable tunes on this one. Nothing that screams "Dance mother F?#@!" but its not bad at all. The sort of stuff a DJ would use to get a dance floor warmed up just after a few intro tracks. Its well produced, high quality and will be good enough to listen for any techno fan. Some of the tracks have a tech-house feel and should also appeal to fans of that genre as well.

Overall i cannot give it more than 3/5. It just does not have enough hooks to grab you or stand out from the crowd. The album artwork is also good and adds something to the whole package.

Its reasonably good , so try it and let the artist knwo what you think. They appreciate any comments (me too).

Did we miss you? Let us know!

Over the past few weeks we have had some amazing releases from some of the net labels.

In the background though there has been a large number of "not so good" releases too, we just don't review them. I wish i had the time to review all the albums. Some of the unmentioned albums are fantastic in their own right, but they just don't stand out from the crowd.

This blog is about finding and pointing out some of the good releases. So if you don't find it here, it might still be good!!

If you had something published that you feel deserves a mention here, please email me. Just remember that the music has to be released under the creative commons license (or similar licensing).
